How the trademark renewal calculator works
For registrations issued on or after November 16, 1989, the ordinary federal maintenance schedule starts with a declaration between the fifth and sixth anniversaries of registration. The first combined declaration and renewal follows between the ninth and tenth anniversaries, then repeats every ten years. The calculator adds those anniversaries in UTC calendar time so leap days and month-end dates do not drift. You can download the estimated schedule as an iCalendar file, with every event labeled as an estimate and linked back to the saved calculation.
The schedule follows the USPTO’s current registration-maintenance guidance. It also shows the six-month statutory grace cutoff. Filing in that grace period generally adds a surcharge; missing the grace cutoff can result in cancellation or expiration.
What date should you enter?
Use the registration date printed on the federal registration certificate or displayed in the live USPTO TSDR record. Do not use the application filing date, publication date, or the date you first used the mark. If you only have a serial or registration number, the live checker retrieves the registration date for you.
What the fee estimate includes
The estimate multiplies the current electronic USPTO maintenance fee by the number of active classes you enter. A first Section 8 or Section 71 declaration and a combined Section 8 and 9 filing have different totals. Grace-period estimates add the applicable per-class surcharges. For Madrid-based registrations, this tool estimates the U.S. Section 71 filing only. International renewal through WIPO is separate, and its fees are not included.
Why a live record check is safer than date math alone
