What we cover—and what we do not
Our narrow subject is post-registration maintenance for United States trademarks: Section 8, Section 9, Section 71, related grace periods, specimens, status changes, official correspondence, and the practical safeguards owners can use around those events. We may explain an adjacent subject when it directly affects that maintenance work, but we do not attempt to be a general legal encyclopedia.
RenewMark is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. A guide or calculator cannot evaluate ownership disputes, excusable nonuse, litigation, international rights, or the facts behind a particular office action. When a record is dead, ambiguous, contested, or unusually old, our pages direct readers to the official record and qualified legal help instead of manufacturing certainty.
Our source hierarchy
Primary sources come first. Deadline rules, forms, procedures, and fees are checked against current pages published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the live TSDR record, applicable regulations, and official manuals or notices when needed. Marketplace claims use the marketplace's own published eligibility materials whenever available. We do not use another commercial service's marketing copy as authority for a legal rule.
Every guide links readers to the controlling official source near the claim it supports. Fee pages state when the amount was last verified and tell readers to confirm the current fee before filing. If two official pages appear inconsistent, we describe the uncertainty or hold the claim rather than quietly choosing the more dramatic version.
How our calculators and live checker work
The renewal calculator uses deterministic calendar rules—not a language model—to add the ordinary fifth-, sixth-, ninth-, tenth-, and later ten-year anniversaries. It handles month ends and leap years in UTC and keeps Madrid-based Section 71 estimates separate from WIPO renewal fees. The date-only calculator is an estimate because it cannot see whether a filing was accepted or a class was deleted.
The live checker adds the official USPTO record. It will not activate a paid watch unless the current live-data contract succeeds and the record can be classified confidently. Automated tests cover deadline boundaries, fee multiplication, old registrations, Madrid registrations, unknown statuses, and failures in upstream data. No calculator replaces review of the live record before filing.
Writing, automation, and review
Software and AI-assisted drafting may help organize research, test calculations, or improve clarity. They are tools, not cited authorities. Before publication, a page must pass deterministic checks for source links, internal-link integrity, metadata, structured data, disclaimers, minimum substance, and a library of unsupported certainty claims identified in prior audits.
Published information is reviewed against official sources, but it is not represented as attorney-reviewed unless a page explicitly says so. We avoid changing dates merely to look fresh, mass-producing near-duplicate pages, or publishing an article simply because a keyword exists. The reason for each page must be that it helps a trademark owner complete a real task.
Updates and corrections
Material changes to a rule, fee, form, or product behavior trigger a source review and an accurate modified date. The deployment audit rejects broken internal links, duplicate search metadata, malformed structured data, unsafe certainty claims, and sitemap drift. Live-data canaries fail loudly when the USPTO contract changes instead of silently substituting invented results.
If you find a factual error, stale source, broken link, or misleading product statement, please submit a correction. Include the page and the official source that conflicts with it. Correction requests are stored before the site confirms receipt and are handled separately from sales.
Commercial independence
RenewMark earns money from annual monitoring subscriptions. We may also earn a disclosed referral fee if a reader chooses an outside filing service. That compensation does not change the order of options: official do-it-yourself forms and government fees are shown first, and RenewMark does not take custody of a customer's filing. Our long-term incentive is to remain useful and trustworthy enough to keep—not frighten—subscribers.
